Best friends Gautam and Buddha are the cross-dressing stars of the New Conquerors, a bawdy traveling theater in rural Bengal. Gautam and Buddha are both gay, and while sex between men is illegal in India, life on the road affords them plenty of adventures. At home, though, Gautam's steely wife and Buddha's jealous boyfriend aim to tie their men down to more conventional roles. Visually arresting and unexpectedly funny, GAUTAM, BUDDHA, AND THE NEW CONQUERORS OF BENGAL thoroughly challenges our assumptions about poverty, India, and gender roles.
